Malcolm Young’s Family Confirm The AC/DC Guitarist Is Suffering From Dementia

Rumors began circulating last week that AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young was retiring from music because he was suffering from dementia, and today his family confirmed the sad news.

“Malcolm is suffering from dementia and the family thanks you for respecting their privacy,” his family said in a statement to People Magazine.

Last week sources connected to the Young family told The Sydney Morning Herald that Malcolm had been moved into full-time care in a nursing home facility in Sydney’s eastern suburbs specialising in dementia.

According to the Young family connection: “If you were in the room with [Malcolm Young] and walked out then came back in one minute later he wouldn’t remember who you are. He has a complete loss of short term memory. His wife Linda has put him in full-time care.”

The first official word on what was assumed to be a serious and debilitating, but still undisclosed, illness, was in April when it was confirmed that Malcolm Young would not be participating in the recording of the next AC/DC album, which will be called ‘Rock Or Bust’. In his place during the recording sessions in a Vancouver studio has been his nephew Steve young. In an announcement from the band’s management, it was revealed that Steve will join Angus Young, frontman Brian Johnson, bassist Cliff Williams and drummer Phil Rudd on stage when the band embark on another massive world tour in 2015.

The eleven track ‘Rock Or Bust’ follows the immensely successful ‘Black Ice’ album, which debuted at #1 in 31 countries upon its release in 2008 and has gone on to sell nearly 8 million copies worldwide. The album was recorded at Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, Canada and finds AC/DC once again working with producer Brendan O’Brien and mixer Mike Fraser.

A sneak peek of the new track “Play Ball” was made available on September 27th in Turner Sports 2014 Major League Baseball post season coverage on TBS.
