Few drummers in American hard rock delivered the raw energy, speed, and groove of Leonard Haze. Best known as the powerhouse drummer and co-founder of Y&T, Haze helped shape the sound of West Coast hard rock during the late 1970s and 1980s. His aggressive double-bass style, explosive live performances, and larger-than-life personality made him a cult hero among rock and metal fans worldwide.
Although he never achieved the mainstream fame of some arena-rock drummers, Leonard Haze remains one of the most respected musicians of the classic hard rock era.
Early Years and Formation of Y&T
Leonard Haze was born on September 7, 1955, in California. He grew up in the Bay Area and started playing drums at a young age, developing a fast and highly energetic style that would later become his trademark. According to the band’s history, Haze was instrumental in forming the group that eventually became Y&T.
The band originally performed cover songs under no official name. Legend has it that when a promoter called asking for the band’s name, Haze looked over at a copy of the Yesterday and Today album by The Beatles and spontaneously named the group “Yesterday & Today.” The band later shortened the name to Y&T.
By 1974, the classic Y&T lineup was established:
- Dave Meniketti – vocals and guitar
- Leonard Haze – drums
- Phil Kennemore – bass
- Joey Alves – guitar

Haze performed on Gillan’s 1991 album Toolbox and toured internationally with the band across dozens of countries.
His work with Gillan demonstrated that his drumming abilities extended far beyond Y&T’s signature sound.

Y&T frontman Dave Meniketti described him as a “legendary drummer” and remembered his enormous personality and influence on rock music.
